Marvin V. Johanning | Obituary

Marvin V. Johanning, 82, of Prairie, died Jan. 21, 2014, in Prairie.

Marvin was born Feb. 3, 1931, in a log cabin in Wartburg, son of Theodore and Anna (nee Buettner) Johanning.

He was baptized and confirmed at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg.

He was a Korean War veteran, serving with the U.S. Army 931st Engineers from 1952-53. He was a truck driver for Waterloo Lumber Co. until he purchased his own bulldozer and worked locally on farm construction. He was a former member of Operating Engineers Local 520.

On April 11, 1964, he married Ruth Ann Rohlfing at Trinity Church in Prairie, and they had one son, Bradley. They purchased a small farm in Prairie in 1968, where he resided and remained a member of Trinity until his death.

In 1984, he was elected road commissioner for Randolph County Road District #3. He served in that capacity for 16 years, including working closely with FEMA during the 1993 flood.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Leland and son Bradley.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, brother Milford, cousins, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and friends.

Visitation was Jan. 25 at Koch-Liefer Funeral Home and Jan. 26 at Trinity Lutheran Church.

A funeral service took place Jan. 26 at the church.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
