Schlecht signs with Rockies as pitcher

Garrett Schlecht, a 2011 Waterloo High School graduate, has switched Major League Baseball organizations — and positions.

Schlecht, who led the Bulldogs offensively during the team’s 2011 third place finish at state, announced Wednesday he has signed with the Colorado Rockies as a pitcher.

He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs as an outfielder in the summer of 2011, but was unable to move up the minor league ranks.

Schlecht also had high school success on the mound as a left-handed arm for the Bulldogs, compiling a 6-2 record and 3.56 ERA his senior year. He will report to the Rockies’ minor league camp in February, in the hopes of succeeding in pro ball as a pitcher.

“I’m very excited for this opportunity,” Schlecht stated in a Wednesday afternoon post on Twitter.
