Several area fire departments responded to a large shed fire in East Carondelet on Saturday afternoon.

The Columbia, Dupo, Prairie du Pont, Cahokia, Millstadt and Camp Jackson fire departments, along with Columbia EMS and MedStar ambulances and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, responded about 2:30 p.m. to a shed fire at 1015 Oklahoma Hill Road in East Carondelet, located off Davis Street Ferry Road. The Waterloo Fire Department moved equipment to the Columbia fire station as backup.

The old shed sits on the property of a modular home, and was in disrepair with various items sprawled in the yard nearby. There were also believed to be several large propane tanks in the shed, which the owner informed firefighters were empty.

Firefighters were on scene for more than three hours, Columbia Fire Chief Mike Roediger said.

He said a cause of the blaze is unknown, but the fire originated in the area of a restored car that was being worked on. In addition to cars and propane tanks inside the shed were various tools and lawn mowers.

“It was probably one of the hottest fires we’ve ever handled,” Roediger said.
