Doris F. Obernagel | Obituary

Doris F. Obernagel (nee Schlueter), 91, of Smithton, born Sept. 30, 1932, in Freeburg, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at BJC Memorial Hospital, Shiloh. 

Doris was an active member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Freeburg. She was a very religious person known for hugs and prayers for anyone who needed them. She had a keen interest in agriculture and her huge beautiful vegetable gardens looked like a photo out of a magazine. Doris was known for her cooking and award-winning baking. She was a generous soul sharing her bounty.

Surviving relatives include son George W. Obernagel III of Waterloo and daughter Helen Obernagel of New Athens, along with many cousins and friends. 

She was preceded by her husband George W. Obernagel Jr., whom she married on Sept. 9, 1952. He died on Sept. 17, 1985. She was also preceded by her parents Walter and Alma Schlueter; twin sisters Nora and Cora Klingelhoefer and sister Opal (Walter) Linss. 

Private visitation and funeral services will be held, with arrangements handled by George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville. 

Burial will take place at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville. 

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s UCC, Freeburg, the FFA chapter of their choice, or to donor’s choice.
