Boys holiday hoops tourneys tip off after Christmas

Boys basketball players won’t have had much time to recover from Christmas indulgence when they begin tournament play Dec. 26 and 27 across the region.

The Columbia-Freeburg Holiday Tournament is being held in Columbia this year and sees teams from Columbia (3- 2), Waterloo (2-3), Dupo (1-5), Marquette (3-2), Lovejoy (2-4) Civic Memorial (2-5), Hillsboro (4-0), Freeburg (2-5), Metro-East Lutheran (4-5) and Lebanon (2-4) meeting up on the hardwood starting Dec. 26, at 11 a.m., when MEL takes on Lebanon.

In the second game, Dupo and Lovejoy will play at 12:30 p.m., followed by Freeburg and Civic Memorial at 2 p.m., Columbia and Hillsboro at 3:30 p.m., Waterloo and the winner of the MEL vs. Lebanon game at 6 p.m., and Marquette against the winner of the Dupo vs. Lovejoy game at 7:30 p.m.

The second round of games will begin Dec. 27, at 11 a.m., with the championship game set for Dec. 28, at 8 p.m.

Gibault (6-0) is playing in the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic at Pinckneyville High School Dec. 27-28.

The Hawks will take on Benton on the first day of action at 10:30 a.m., and a team from Lyon County, Ky., at 8:30 p.m.

They will resume play Dec. 28, and the tournament’s championship game will be played that evening at 8 p.m.

Valmeyer (1-8) will travel to Sesser-Valier High School to play in their holiday tournament Dec. 26-30.

They are set to play Woodlawn in their first game, at 10:30 a.m. The tournament will wrap up Dec. 30, at 7 p.m.
