Josephine “Sue” Spytek

Josephine “Sue” Spytek, 95, of Columbia, died May 16, 2013, at Relais Bonne Eau Hospice Home, Edwardsville.

She was born Nov. 7, 1917, in Herrin, daughter of the late Joseph and Maggie Bagdonas (nee Wilent).

She married the late Leo Spytek  on Aug. 23, 1944, in Evanston; he preceded her in death on April 13, 2005.

Mrs. Spytek was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia, and VFW Post 2210 Auxiliary in Ste. Genevieve, Mo. She was also known as Columbia’s first female mail carrier.

Survivors include her children Sue Ann (Robert) Kay of Golden, Colo., Norma Lee (Sherrill) Puckett of Loveland, Ohio, John L. (Marcia) Spytek of Waterloo, and Joseph M. (Linda) Spytek of Arlington, Va.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was May 20, at Lawlor Funeral Home, Columbia.

Funeral services were May 21, at the funeral home, Father Carl Scherrer officiating.

Interment followed at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis.

Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception School Education Fund or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
