Harvey L. Vanier, 89, of Versailles, Ky., died Dec. 1, 2013, in Versailles, Ky.

He was born April 21, 1924, in Diller, Neb., son of the late Lawrence Earl and Marie (nee Weier) Vanier.

Mr. Vanier was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was an accomplished and hard-working thoroughbred horse trainer for more than 60 years, having farms in both Versailles, Ky., and Waterloo. He was a two-time winner of The Bluegrass, winner of the Travers Stakes, and three-time participant in the Kentucky Derby with horses Admiral Shield, Fellow and Western Playboy. Mr. Vanier was also an eight-time leading trainer at Arlington Park and a leading trainer at Keeneland.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy A. Vanier, nee Aitken; daughters Lyda (Brian) Vanier Williamson and Jenny (Frank) Vanier Allen; grandsons Brian Harvey Williamson, Samuel Lewis Williamson, Will Lewis Allen and Luke Harvey Allen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son Harvey Lawrence Vanier Jr.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 6 and 9 a.m. until time of service Dec. 7, at Quernheim Funeral Home, Waterloo.

Funeral services will take place 10 a.m. Dec. 7, at the funeral home, Pastor Thelma Burgonio-Watson officiating.

Burial will be at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery, Waterloo.
