Harold E. Ries | Obituary

Harold E. Ries, 81, of Waterloo, died May 7, 2013, in Waterloo.

He was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Columbia, son of the late Edwin George and Frieda Maria Ries (nee Gummersheimer).

He was married to Imogene Ries (nee Schmitz); she survives him.

Ries was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ. He was retired from Union Electric as a unit operations engineer at the Meramec plant after 29 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a former member of Maeystown Sportsman’s Club, Waterloo Sportsman’s Club, Waterloo IOOF #27, and Monroe County Kloepper Club at JV’s, Acorns and Willie’s West End. He was also an avid fisherman and gardener.

Survivors include his wife; children Bret (Tami) Ries, Brenda (Bill) Lanman, Barbara Ries (Bryan Garcia), Beverly (Kevin) Layton, and Bonnie Ries (Robert Haudrich); grandchildren Jeffrey Ries, Amanda (Quinn) Huber, Rebecca Ries, Jamie Lanman, Rachel Layton and Elizabeth Layton; brothers Harvey Ries and Marvin (Rosalie) Ries; and sisters Lucille (Lavern) Lang and Loretta (Joe) Vogt; along with nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister-in-law Marion Ries and brother-in-law Homer Stemler.

Visitation and funeral services were May 10 at Quernheim Funeral Home, Waterloo, Pastor Matt Friz officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
