Soccer season nears midway point

Boys high school soccer is just about at the midway point of the season already. The past week has been good and bad for area teams.

Waterloo
The Bulldogs are currently on a four-game winning streak after losing their first game of the season on Sept. 3, and now stand at 9-1.

They earned three of those wins since last Wednesday, starting with a 9-0 win over Civic Memorial. Clay Metz led the team with a hat trick and Ben Huels followed with two goals. Cole Kaiping, Ethan Lewis, Kane Osterhage and Kyle Schaefer each scored a goal.

Waterloo followed with a 5-2 win against Mascoutah on Thursday. Osterhage added three goals and Huels scored two more. On Saturday, the team defeated Jerseyville, 4-1. Huels scored two goals to lead the ‘Dogs. Metz and Osterhage each added a goal.

Waterloo is currently sitting atop the Mississippi Valley standings with a 3-0 record in league play. The team hosted Highland, another league opponent, on Tuesday.

Osterhage leads the team in goals (14) and assists (eight). Ten players have scored this season for the Bulldogs.

Trevor Coplin owns a 6-0 record in net, allowing three goals and committing 22 saves.

Columbia
The defending Class 1A state champs still haven’t recorded a loss on the young season. The Eagles, who have moved up to Class 2A, picked up three more wins this past week.

The team defeated Lebanon 8-0 on Thursday. Ryan Gudeman, Sean Rickey and Cameron Roth each scored two goals. Dalton Verrett and Alec Broske each had a goal.

On Friday, the Eagles beat Wesclin, 12-0. Verrett led the team with three goals. Adam Becker and Broske each scored twice. Tyler Begis, Logan Cannon, Connor Jackson and Rickey each found the net for a goal.

Columbia beat Highland 5-1 on Monday. It was the first goal the team has allowed this season. The Eagles are outscoring opponents 47-1 entering Tuesday’s game against rival Gibault. Rickey had a hat trick in the game. Broske and Gudeman each scored a goal.

Columbia sits atop the Cahokia standings at 4-0. Overall, the team is 6-0-1.

Gibault
After getting two wins in a row, Gibault is now in the midst of a three-game losing streak. The team lost to Belleville West, 5-2, on Sept. 5 and Mater Dei, 3-2, on Sept. 8.

In the team’s only game last week, Gibault lost to Edwardsville, 2-0.

The team is now 5-6 on the season. The Hawks played at Columbia on Tuesday night.

Dalton Scace leads the team in scoring with nine goals, while also adding two assists. Ben Mueth follows with five goals and three assists. Karson Huels, a freshman, has two goals and leads the team in assists with five.

Trevor Davis has racked up a 5-5 record in net. He’s allowed 16 goals and has stopped 57 shots.
Valmeyer

A week after winning the Hancock Tournament in St. Louis, Valmeyer dropped two games this past week.

On Thursday, the team lost to Valley Park, Mo., 4-1. Easton Wallace scored the team’s lone goal.
The Pirates then lost by the same score to Wood River on Monday. Brandon Tuttle scored in that one.
The Pirates are now 3-6. They play at Columbia on Thursday. The team is currently in third place in the Cahokia Conference.

They’ve been outscored 31-11. Trent and Vaughn Larson each have three goals. Wallace and Ryan Brinkmann have two goals. Tuttle has one.
