Illinois Press Association awards were presented Friday in Springfield and the Republic-Times brought home several state honors.

The newspaper won three first place plaques — two in editorial and one in advertising — as well as multiple second and third place awards in its division of mid-size weeklies.

Earlier this year, the Republic-Times won the overall award for general excellence from the Southern Illinois Editorial Association. The paper placed third in both editorial and advertising general excellence at the state level on Friday.

The R-T also finished third in the running for the editorial sweepstakes award, which goes to the paper in each division with the most cumulative points in contest categories.

The paper won IPA first place honors in the editorial categories of Best Sports Photo and Best Photo Series and the advertising category of Best Holiday Ad.

Among the second place awards were those for promotion of the public’s right to know (Freedom of Information Act) and for headline writing.

Third place honors went to the R-T website (www.RepublicTimes.net).

The Republic-Times newspaper has been serving Monroe County and surrounding areas since 1890.
