Police: Self-inflicted shooting near Waterloo

Hecker Fire Department first responders and Millstadt EMS responded at about 2 p.m. Thursday along with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department to a home in the 2500 area of Cemetery Road near St. Augustine Cemetery in rural Waterloo concerning a male subject who apparently shot himself.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department said a woman called to report the incident, and that it is being investigated as a self-inflicted shooting by a 71-year-old male. Police said the man died at the scene.

The address sits just inside the St. Clair County line with Monroe County near Hecker. A first responder reported that an ARCH Air Medical Services helicopter was called to the scene but then canceled.

Firefighters reported that the house belongs to a retired couple. Six sheriff cars reported to the scene.
