Injury crash involving deer in Columbia

Emergency personnel responded shortly after 12:40 p.m. Thursday to a vehicle crash involving a deer on Route 3 at Carl Street in Columbia with injury sustained to the male driver.

The deer broke through the windshield as a result of the collision.

Columbia police, EMS and fire department responders were at the scene.

Police said a 2006 Toyota Scion driven by Walter Huff, 55, of St. Louis, was traveling south on Route 3 when witnesses said a large buck ran across the roadway into the vehicle’s path. The Scion left the roadway to the left following the collision and stopped in the median.

Huff was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis County for treatment of serious injuries.
