A rivalry high school girls soccer clash last Tuesday between Columbia and Waterloo ended with the visiting Eagles flying home with a 5-0 victory.

The Bulldogs thought they had a 1-0 lead at halftime with a goal just before the halftime buzzer sounded. But the goal was wiped from the scoreboard after being determined to have been scored after the buzzer sounded.

Columbia capitalized on that momentum by proceeding to score five times in the second half. Maddie Mauch scored twice, and the Eagles got other goals from Reese Woelfel, Sarah Ross and Lucy Leitschuh.

Jessica Bearley made nine saves in net for Columbia for the shutout.

Last Thursday, Columbia dropped a 4-3 match at Granite City. Riley Mathews finished with a goal and assist for the Eagles.

On Monday, the Eagles snuck past Oakville by the score of 3-2. Mauch scored all three goals for Columbia – including her 100th career tally. Woelfel had three assists in the win.

Columbia hosts a tough Nerinx Hall squad on Wednesday, falling 1-0. Bearley made 10 saves in net.

Mauch has 27 goals and 15 assists this season, followed on the team by Mathews at 13 goals and 15 assists, and Ross with 14 goals and seven assists.

Waterloo (8-3-1) rebounded from the loss to rival Columbia to blast past cross-town rival Gibault, 9-1, at Oerter Park in Columbia on Monday. Liv Colson notched three goals and Megan Young scored twice for the ‘Dogs.

Waterloo hosted Highland on Tuesday, falling 2-1. Olivia Gardner scored for Waterloo.

Waterloo hosts Civic Memorial on Thursday and plays Monday at Father McGivney.

Colson leads the ‘Dogs in scoring this spring with 14 goals and five assists.

Gibault (3-10) preceded Monday’s loss on the home pitch to Waterloo with a 4-0 loss at Mascoutah last Wednesday.

Last Tuesday, it was a 6-3 defeat for the Hawks at the hands of the Crusaders from Althoff.

Emily Richardson leads the Hawks in scoring this season at 14 goals and five assists.

Gibault hosts Murphysboro on Friday and Marquette on Monday.
