Double drug overdose save in Columbia

Police and EMS personnel responded about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday to two occupants in a vehicle who were overdosing on suspected fentanyl on the I-255 ramp to southbound Route 3 near Palmer Road in Columbia.

The vehicle, a tan 2011 Hyundai SUV, was first called in by a motorist for reckless driving on I-255 eastbound into Columbia from Missouri. A follow-up call to police a few minutes later had the vehicle seen parked on the side of the road on the ramp.

A responding Columbia police officer pulled up to the vehicle and observed the driver initially in a responsive state but the passenger unresponsive, after which the officer administered the opioid overdose reversal medicine Narcan to the passenger. The driver then also began to overdose and was also administered Narcan

Both subjects, a male and female from Ballwin, Mo., were transported by Columbia EMS ambulances to Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis County.

An Illinois State Police trooper also responded due to the SUV having struck a guardrail on I-255 prior to stopping in Columbia and took over investigation of the case.
