Boys taking it to the hoop

Local high school boys basketball teams posted recent wins and hope to continue to do so with the regular season winding down. 

Columbia (20-7) posted a 51-37 victory over Bloomington Central Catholic in a showcase at O’Fallon on Friday night. Sam Donald continued his impressive junior season, pouring in 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Brody Landgraf added 13 points. 

Last Wednesday, the Eagles won 67-52 over Civic Memorial. Landgraf, a sophomore, scored a career high 24 points. Donald added 22 points and nine rebounds. Columbia dominated the turnover battle in this one, 16-5.

The Eagles faced a stiff road test at Cahokia Conference rival Breese Central on Tuesday, falling 48-41 despite 24 points from Donald. Columbia plays Friday at Roxana.

Donald is averaging nearly 20 points per game to go along with 8.2 rebounds per game on the season. 

Landgraf is averaging near 12 points per game.

Waterloo (15-13) picked up a 51-44 victory over Mississippi Valley Conference foe Civic Memorial on Friday. 

The Bulldogs played Tuesday at Edwardsville, falling 49-41, then travel Friday to Jerseyville and then host cross-town rival Gibault this Saturday night. 

Alex Stell, a junior, is averaging 16.8 points and nearly 10 rebounds per contest this season for Waterloo. 

Rodrigo Lopez Tercero and Caleb Yochum, both seniors, are each averaging about 12 points per game. 

Gibault (16-12) was in the midst of a five-game winning streak entering this week.

On Saturday, the Hawks won 38-30 at Okawville thanks to a 16-3 run in the fourth quarter. Kanen Augustine had a stellar night defensively for Gibault. 

Last Tuesday, Gibault won 49-37 over Valmeyer.

The Hawks hosted Granite City on Tuesday, falling 67-52.

Gavin Kesler is averaging nearly 16 points per game to go along with 7.3 rebounds per game this season to pace Gibault. 

Augustine, a senior point guard, is averaging 14.5 points per game. 

Valmeyer (9-17) won 72-40 at Hancock on Monday, with Aiden Crossin pouring in 25 points and grabbing seven rebounds for the Pirates.

On Friday, Valmeyer dropped a hard-fought 64-60 contest to Steeleville. Landon Roy led the Pirates with 26 points. 

Valmeyer plays Wednesday at Bunker Hill before hosting SIUE Charter on Thursday and Dupo on Friday. 

Crossin, a junior, leads the Pirates in scoring this season at 17.1 points per game. 

Dupo (0-22) is still in search of a win. 

The Tigers lost 50-28 at Maryville Christian on Thursday, 57-28 at New Athens on Friday, and 91-26 to Sparta on Monday. 

Kaden Scheppelman paced the Tigers with 19 points in Thursday’s loss.

Keith West scored 14 points to lead Dupo on Monday. 

Dupo hosts Steeleville on Tuesday following Friday’s showdown at Valmeyer.
