Red Bud woman dies in crash near Waterloo

A Red Bud woman was pronounced dead at the scene after her car crashed into the back of a tractor on Floraville Road just northeast of Waterloo in St. Clair County around 5:20 p.m. Thursday. 

The victim was identified as Margaret Ann “Peggy” Hayes, 59, of Red Bud. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department accident report issued today states that the front end of a 1998 Chevy Malibu driven by Hayes apparently struck the rear of a 2000 Case IH Quad Tractor driven by Frank J. Ruppert, 57, of Coulterville, which was traveling southbound in the area of 4300 Floraville Road near Celeste Estates Drive.

Millstadt fire and EMS responders assisted St. Clair County deputies with the crash. A St. Clair County deputy coroner pronounced Hayes deceased at 6:15 p.m. The driver of the tractor was not injured.

Visitation for Hayes will take place 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 27 and 8 to 10:30 a.m. Dec. 28 at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home, Red Bud.

Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Dec. 28 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ruma, Father Cyyde Grogan officiating. 

Burial will be at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Ruma.
