The Columbia Eagles softball team (31-5) — this week’s Republic-Times Team of the Week — notched its third postseason win and second shutout, 8-0, against Carbondale in the Salem Sectional semifinals on Wednesday night.

The Eagles started the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior slugger Alexis Royer knocked one out of the park and finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Fellow hot hitter, sophomore Taryn Pena, also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and hit her sixth double in the last five games.

Junior Brianna Weilbacher threw seven shutout innings to improve her record to 16-3, allowing just four hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts.

CHS next faces Alton Marquette on Saturday in the Salem Sectional finals at 11 a.m. Columbia was scheduled to face Marquette (28-6) earlier in the regular season, but the game was snowed out.
