Local athletes Brendan DePoy of Columbia and Ethan Ruff of Waterloo have been chosen for the 2013 PNC Bank High School Baseball Showcase at Busch Stadium.

The prestigious event, to be held on June 14, sponsored by PNC Bank, Rawlings and Prairie Farms, will feature an All-Star luncheon at the stadium followed by a skills competition at 3:30 p.m., that will test players’ speed in a 60-yard dash, throwing accuracy and hitting ability in a home run derby. Former Cardinals Chris Duncan and Alan Benes will be the pitchers for the derby.

The All-Star game, consisting of 25 players from Missouri and 25 players from Illinois who were chosen by area coaches and sports writers, will take place at 7:30 p.m., in the event’s first-ever game under the lights.

“I believe in the value of youth sports,” St. Louis Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny, one of the founders of the High School Baseball Showcase game, said on the event’s web site. “Seeing these talented kids come out and play for love of the game is something that inspires me every year.”

PNC Bank will also award $1,000 to the school’s athletic department that displays the most school spirit.

Tickets are free for the event and can be picked up at the Waterloo PNC Bank Branch at 971 N. Illinois Route 3.

Added to the list of local stars Tuesday night, recent state winning coach Gibault’s Andy Skaer was named as one of two assistant coaches in the Showcase this year. Skaer, and Triad High School Coach Jesse Bugger, will assist former Cardinal Alan Benes in coaching Team Illinois.
