Young Hawks ready to fly
Though young, the Gibault Catholic High School girls basketball squad is looking to improve upon last season’s 14-14 showing.
The Hawks return just two seniors for head coach Barry Parks for the 2025-26 campaign, those being multi-sport standouts Karmon Grohmann and Hope Chambers. Both have been solid in the early going this hoops season for the Hawks, who got off to a 3-2 start.
Grohmann is averaging nearly 24 points per game to go along with 6.4 rebounds, three steals and 2.8 blocks per contest.
Chambers is grabbing nearly eight rebounds per game so far this season.
Another returning starter for Gibault is junior Olivia Biffar, who is averaging nearly 10 points per game this season along with 3.4 steals.
Among those being counted on to contribute on the court this winter for the Hawks, according to Parks, are junior Natalie Kelemetc and sophomores Payton Kelemetc and Maggie Altes.
“I think our biggest strength is our quickness,” Parks said. “I am hoping our depth will develop over the course of the season so it becomes a strength as well.”
With wins over Dupo, New Athens and Belleville West in the early going, the Hawks are showing they can pose a problem for any team on their schedule.
“Our team is still young with only two seniors, but we think we can improve on last year’s win total and compete for a regional title,” Parks said.
