Tough sledding for soccer squads

Local high school girls soccer squads are finding it hard to win matches of late due to facing some tough opponents.

Waterloo (9-4-2) battled to a 1-1 tie with Father McGivney on Monday. Liv Colson scored for the Bulldogs on an assist from Grace Pohl. Larkin Nottmeier made six saves in net for Waterloo. 

On Tuesday, Waterloo won 8-0 over Jerseyville. Colson scored a hat trick, with Pohl adding two goals and three assists, and Chloe Wagenknecht adding two goals and an assist.

On Thursday, Waterloo hosted rival Triad and after 100 minutes of play, the Knights pulled off a 1-0 overtime victory.

Last Tuesday, Waterloo dropped a 2-1 contest against Highland in a fierce Mississippi Valley Conference clash. Olivia Gardner scored for Waterloo on an assist from Paige Lindhorst.

Waterloo plays Monday at Belleville West and travels Tuesday to Mascoutah. 

Colson, a senior, leads the Bulldogs in scoring this season with 18 goals and five assists. Megan Young has 10 goals and five assists.

Columbia (13-3-1) lost two recent games to quality Missouri schools before downing a St. Louis school Wednesday.

On Monday, it was a 5-4 defeat at the hands of Union. Maddie Mauch scored three goals and recorded an assist for the Eagles. Reese Woelfel netted Columbia’s other goal.

Last Wednesday, Columbia lost 1-0 to Nerinx Hall. Jessica Bearley made 10 saves in net for the Eagles.

Columbia played Parkway West on Wednesday, winning 3-1. Mauch recorded two goals and an assist. Lucy Leitschuh added a goal and assist.

The Eagles face Rock Bridge at Union on Saturday afternoon.

Mauch, a senior, leads Columbia in scoring this season at 32 goals and 17 assists. Riley Mathews has 13 goals and 16 assists.

Gibault (3-12) lost 7-0 to Marquette on Monday, which was preceded by a 4-1 loss at home Friday night to Murphysboro.

The Hawks host Freeburg this coming Monday. 

Emily Richardson continues to lead Gibault in scoring this season. She has 15 goals and five assists.
