J.B. Bridge jumper incident ends peacefully

Emergency personnel worked together to bring peaceful resolution to an incident involving a suicidal man who had intentions of jumping off the Jefferson Barracks Bridge shortly after 7 a.m. Friday.

Columbia police, fire department and EMS personnel assisted the St. Louis County Police Department, Illinois State Police and Missouri Highway Patrol in the incident.

The man, who carries a Missouri driver’s license but has been residing with relatives in Waterloo, had parked the car he was driving on the shoulder of the eastbound lanes of I-255 at the Missouri end of the J.B. Bridge, police said. He had weights strapped to his body and a firearm in his possession, police said.

After talking with emergency personnel on scene, the man agreed to be transported by Columbia EMS ambulance to a St. Louis hospital. His firearm was seized by Columbia police.
