Next hockey season set to start

The Columbia and Freeburg-Waterloo hockey squads wrapped up regular season play this week in the Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association. 

Up next are the playoffs.

Columbia (13-7-4) picked up a 5-3 win over Vianney on Monday, getting goals from five different players. Jack Reuss registered a goal and three assists.

The star of the game Monday was goalie Dalton Fitzgerald, who made 45 saves in net for the Eagles. 

On Tuesday, the Eagles tied Belleville, 5-5, securing the No. 4 seed in the Varsity 2A playoffs. Reuss had a hat trick and two assists.

On Thursday, Columbia won 7-1 over Granite City. Reuss had four goals and an assist. Cam Ax recorded three assists.

Reuss has 40 goals and 24 assists, which ranks near the top in the league in scoring this season. 

Freeburg-Waterloo (16-8) posted a 5-1 victory Monday night over Bethalto. Jackson Carter scored twice for the Raging Bulldogs, with goalie Logan Sherman making 25 saves.

The Raging Bulldogs closed out regular season play Tuesday against Triad in a battle for the top seed in the Varsity 1A division. Freeburg-Waterloo posted a 6-3 win, with Cohin Reynolds scoring twice.

Columbia won the Varsity 1A playoffs last season, resulting in the Eagles being bumped up to 2A this season.
