Hoopsters finding their groove

Two local high school boys basketball squads are streaking as a few others are still trying to find their footing. 

Columbia (15-4) has now won 10 straight games, many of them in blowout fashion. 

The Eagles posted 59-29 victory Monday over Okawville to open play at the Okawville Invitational Tournament. Sam Donald, a 6-foot-8 junior, led the way for Columbia with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Brody Landgraf added 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Hayes van Breusegen contributed 11 points.

Columbia will take on Wesclin in the tourney at 6 p.m. Friday, then conclude tourney action Saturday.

The Eagles travel to rival Waterloo at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. 

On Saturday, Columbia won 73-39 at home over Cahokia. The Eagles shot 61 percent from the floor as a team, with Donald scoring 28 points and pulling down nine rebounds. 

On Thursday, the Eagles shot 67 percent in a 72-27 with over Wood River. Donald again led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds.  

Last Tuesday, Columbia won big over Vandalia to the tune of 57-32. Donald scored 20 points and van Breusegen contributed 13 points and eight steals. 

Donald is averaging 20.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and nearly four assists per contest this season. 

Landgraf is averaging 12.1 points per game. 

Gibault (11-11) had won six straight games – including a trio of contests at the Chester Invitational Tournament to win that event for a third straight year.

On Saturday, the Hawks won 44-36 over Saxony Lutheran in the tourney final. Gavin Kesler led the way for Gibault with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kanen Augustine, who was named tourney MVP, added 10 points and five assists.

On Thursday, Gibault won 47-40 over Chester in the tourney. Augustine scored 15 points, with Kesler contributing eight points and 15 rebounds. 

Last Tuesday, the Hawks opened tourney play with a 59-30 win over Chester JV. Augustine had 19 points and four steals. Kesler scored 17 points and pulled down six rebounds. 

Kesler is averaging 15.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. He’s shooting 82.3 percent from the free throw line.

Augustine is averaging 14.6 points and 2.1 steals per game this season. 

The Hawks opened Okawville Invitational Tournament play Tuesday against Carlyle, falling 54-42. Gibault faces Madison on Wednesday night.  

Waterloo (10-9) lost two of three recent games. 

The Bulldogs dropped a 77-49 contest to Alton in the Southern Illinois Classic at Althoff on Saturday. 

On Thursday, Waterloo lost 49-34 at Triad in a Mississippi Valley Conference clash. 

Last Tuesday, the ‘Dogs won 50-41 over Steeleville behind 15 points from Rodrigo Lopez Tercero and 14 points from Reid Metzger – including three three-pointers.

Alex Stell, a 6-foot-10 junior who missed a few games recently due to injury, has returned to action. He’s averaging nearly 20 points and 11 rebounds per game this season. 

Waterloo plays in the Sparta Mid-Winter Classic this week, starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against Red Bud, then 7 p.m. Thursday against Freeburg and 5:30 p.m. Friday against Trico. The tourney concludes Saturday. 

Valmeyer (6-12) picked up a 55-32 win Monday at home over Grandview. 

On Saturday, the Pirates ended Chester tourney play with a 58-54 loss to New Athens. 

Last Wednesday, Valmeyer won 70-55 over Perryville at the tourney. Aiden Crossin scored 25 points, Landon Roy scored 17 points, and Luke Blackwell contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Pirates.

Crossin leads the team in scoring this season at 16.1 points per game, followed by Roy at 13.4 points, 4.5 assists and nearly three steals per game. Blackwell averages 8.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. 

Valmeyer plays Friday at New Athens before hosting New Athens this coming Tuesday. 

Dupo (0-13) lost 46-10 at Marissa on Thursday and 51-22 at Bunker Hill last Tuesday. 

Kaden Scheppelman continues to be the leading scorer for the Tigers this season. 

Dupo hosted Wood River on Tuesday, plays Wednesday at Metro and travels this coming Tuesday to Red Bud.
