Holiday play for girls hoops

It’s holiday tournament time for high school girls basketball, with Waterloo hosting a tournament that also includes Columbia and Gibault. 

Waterloo (5-9) opened this year’s tourney on Tuesday afternoon in thrilling fashion, picking up a one-point victory to snap a four-game losing skid.

The Bulldogs trailed 26-18 at halftime, only to rally in the second half for a 40-39 win over Marissa. 

Waterloo dropped a 48-23 contest to Mater Dei on Thursday. The Bulldogs committed 21 turnovers in the contest.

On Friday, the Bulldogs lost at home to Jerseyville, 48-36. Kristin Smith led the way for Waterloo with 11 points and nine rebounds. 

Waterloo hosts rival Columbia at 6:30 p.m Wednesday, then battles Marquette at 5 p.m. Thursday before wrapping up the tourney Friday. 

Columbia (11-4) lost 53-40 to Oakville last Wednesday. Ava Langhans led the way with 13 points for the Eagles.

Columbia opened tourney play Tuesday night against Marquette, winning 56-42, then after Wednesday’s showdown with Waterloo will play 3:30 p.m. Thursday against Marissa before concluding tourney play Friday. 

Taylor Holten leads Columbia in scoring this season at 15.2 points per contest.

Gibault (4-9) lost 50-44 to Wesclin on Thursday. Bri Baldridge scored 15 points and Kamille Grohmann scored 12 points for the Hawks. 

Gibault opened tourney play Tuesday against Roxana, losing 39-31, then faces Carlyle at 2 p.m. Wednesday and Red Bud at 2 p.m. Thursday before concluding tourney play Friday.
