Eagles, Hawks win regional volleyball titles

The Columbia and Gibault volleyball teams are heading to sectional play following regional title wins on Thursday night.

In the Class 3A Waterloo Regional, Columbia (32-4) dominated Mascoutah with a 25-17, 25-16 victory. Eagles sophomore Colene Hamilton, this week’s Republic-Times Athlete of the Week, once again led her team in kills with eight. She recorded 13 kills in Tuesday’s three-set victory over Waterloo in the regional semifinal.

Megan Huffman and Jordan Rippelmeyer added five kills each to propel the Eagles to the Class 3A Benton Sectional. They will play Massac County on Tuesday night.

In the Class 2A Wesclin Regional, Gibault took down top-seeded Nashville in two sets, 25-20, 25-23, to claim its second straight regional crown. The Hawks advance to the Class 2A Sparta Sectional, where they will take on Carlinville on Tuesday night. The Hawks defeated Carlyle in two sets on Tuesday night to advance to the championship game.

Lauren Goldschmidt led the way for Gibault with 11 kills against Nashville. Ashley Grohmann contributed 22 assists and Lauren Schmidt added four kills and two blocks.

In the Class 1A New Athens Regional, Valmeyer’s season came to an end Thursday night against the host team. New Athens won in two close sets, 25-20, 25-23, to advance to the sectional.

Valmeyer led 23-22 in the second set, only to see New Athens close out the victory.
