Columbia man charged with child porn crimes

A Columbia man was charged this week with federal crimes related to child pornography.

Stephen R. Wigginton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced Friday that Dan S. Daniels, 49, of Columbia, was arraigned on a two-count indictment charging him with receipt of child pornography and possession of pre-pubescent child porn.

Daniels was ordered held without bond following a detention hearing held immediately after his arraignment at the federal courthouse in East St. Louis.

Court information states that on or about Oct. 12, 2014, Daniels knowingly received two images of child porn, one of a pre-pubescent male engaged in sexual intercourse with an adult female and the other of a pre-pubescent female in the “lascivious display of her genitals.” On or about Oct. 17, 2014, Daniels knowingly possessed a desktop computer that contained images of child porn that involved pre-pubescent minors or minors who had not attained 12 years of age.

Trial is scheduled for April 6. If convicted, Daniels could be sentenced to anywhere between five and 20 years in prison on each charge and fined up to $250,000.

The case was investigated by the Columbia Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Springfield Child Exploitation Task Force. The case is assigned to Assistant U.S. Attorney Angela Scott.
