Strong storms cause damage across the area

Around 1:30 p.m. Friday, a strong storm swept through the area, resulting in damage reported throughout the area. Lightning struck a power substation in Waterloo and Valmeyer received wind damage.

In Red Bud, the storm caused a large tree to fall on power lines on East Market Street, downing lines and breaking at least two poles. On Fieldcrest Drive, a shed was picked up by what one witness described as a funnel cloud, the North County News reported. The shed was thrown between two neighboring houses, hitting a power pole.
Much of Red Bud was without power for a few hours.
The outfield fence of the Valmeyer High School baseball field was blown over by strong straightline winds during Friday’s storm, resulting in a change in plans for Saturday’s Monroe County Baseball Tournament.
Games were scheduled to be played in Waterloo starting at noon, but more rain overnight led to the cancellation of the tournament altogether.
