Lightning strike at Waterloo substation

The substation near the Monroe County Annex, at Route 3 and Illinois Avenue in Waterloo, took a direct lightning strike to a metering point at about 1:30 p.m. Friday, causing widespread power outages.

The Waterloo Fire Department responded to quickly put out a pole that had caught on fire, and an emergency generator at the power plant activated, restoring much of the power across the city as of 2 p.m.
