Distillery, crematorium proposed

The Monroe County Zoning Board of Appeals on Tuesday voted to recommend county board approval of rezoning for a proposed distillery in Columbia and proposed crematorium in Waterloo. Both requests will go before the county board for formal approval on Feb. 18.

Alan and Cheryl Stumpf requested a rezoning of 10 acres for the purpose of building a small craft distillery on Centerville Road near Gilmore Lake Road. The plan is to start making corn-based vodka and legal moonshine and eventually add bourbon for wholesale distribution.

Quernheim Funeral Home requested a rezoning of 6.9 acres of land across the road from their current facility for the purpose of building a crematorium. No timetable has been set for this project.

Also during the zoning meeting, the board gave approval for the YMCA to put up an LED-lighted sign outside its facility off Route 3 that changes messaging up to four times per hour.
