Waterloo police, fire and EMS personnel responded to a single-car crash off Route 3 near Illinois Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. Fortunately, it appears serious injury was avoided.

The car involved was a white Mercedes 230 Kompressor driven by Jon Weatherfield, 36, of Waterloo. The southbound vehicle left the roadway and continued more than 300 feet down into a brushy area near transformers stationed in front of the Monroe County Annex Building, which houses the county’s ambulance garage.

Weatherfield told police he fell asleep behind the wheel, causing the crash. He refused medical transport on scene. No tickets were issued.

Emergency personnel responded immediately, as the vehicle came to rest near the ambulance garage driveway, and the driver had already been able to exit the car by himself without serious injury.
