Multiple area fire departments, including Columbia, Millstadt, Dupo and Waterloo, responded to a fire in the salvage yard outside Marty’s Used Car & Truck Parts at 2014 Camp Jackson Road in Cahokia on Monday afternoon.

Thick black smoke could be seen billowing throughout the area beginning around 2:40 p.m.

The incident was initially called in as a brush fire, but aerial images from the scene seem to indicate metal and plastic items caught fire in the yard.

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

A hazardous materials unit was dispatched to the scene shortly before 6 p.m.
