Sister Dorothy Marie (Mary Cordella) Dietz, ASC, 79, of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, Ruma Center, Ruma, died at 7:40 pm, Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, at the Ruma Center, Ruma.

Sister Dorothy Marie was born Aug. 22, 1936, in Waterloo, daughter of the late Conrad and Lucille Dietz (nee Fleming).

She made her first vows as an Adorer of the Blood of Christ on July 1, 1957, and perpetual profession on July 2, 1962.

Sr. Dorothy Marie was engaged in a variety of ministries, including housekeeping, sewing, cooking, chauffeuring, maintenance and home visiting. Her final ministry, spanning more than 30 years, was as a home visitor to shut-ins for Community Care Systems, Inc., Hospice of Southern Illinois.

She loved her work with hospice. In 1996, she received the Butterfly Award, presented in recognition of “her dedicated, sensitive, caring and loving volunteer service.” She was always willing to go the extra mile.

The North County News article of Thursday, May 2, 1996, also stated that “Sister Dorothy Marie enjoys her ministry of service to people in need… Sister has journeyed as a friend with patients and families who have become friends forever.”

Sr. Dorothy Marie considered it a privilege “to be able to be part of a professional organization providing quality care to all.” She also received this prestigious award in 2008 and 2012.

Sr. Dorothy Marie was also active in helping victims of the Flood of ’93. The Monroe County Board of Commissioners awarded her a Certificate of Appreciation for her “valuable, distinguished, and meritorious service” to the citizens of this county while serving in the capacity of skirting the FEMA trailers for the Flood of ’93.

Survivors include her two sisters, Mary Toal and Margaret Reinhold; one brother, Don Dietz; one sister-in-law, Diane Dietz; nieces and nephews; the many families she helped in her ministry with Hospice of Southern Illinois; and members of the U.S. Region of Adorers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Joseph Dietz, her sister-in-law Joann Dietz, her brother-in-law Robert Toal, and her nephew Karl Reinhold.

Visitation is Thursday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Friday, Aug. 19, from 8 to 10:45 a.m., at Ruma Center Chapel, Ruma.

A wake service will be held Thursday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m., at Ruma Center Chapel, Ruma, Msgr. Dennis Schaefer officiating.

Interment will follow at the Convent Cemetery, Ruma.
