Reckless driver crashes in Red Bud

Emergency personnel responded about 1:30 a.m. Sunday to a single-vehicle crash at 1445 W. Market Street (Route 3) in Red Bud.

Waterloo police said charges remain pending in the incident.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department said that at 1:08 a.m., Waterloo officers were dispatched to the area of Route 3 southbound near Dobbs for a gray SUV traveling all over the roadway.

The MCSD said Waterloo officers located the SUV and attempted to pull it over, but the driver refused and continued southbound on Route 3. Waterloo police requested assistance from the MCSD as the vehicle was continuing south out of Waterloo city limits.

Deputies arrived in the area to assist and eventually took over pursuit of the SUV.

The MCSD said the vehicle was swerving from lane to lane into oncoming traffic and speeds would go from 70 to 45 miles per hour, leading deputies to believe the driver was intoxicated and not able to safely operate the vehicle.

Deputies attempted to warn oncoming traffic as the SUV would travel in the oncoming traffic lane, running vehicles off the roadway. The SUV would leave the roadway and into the grass numerous times, police said.

Just north of Red Bud, the SUV left the roadway, went through a ditch, traveled back into the ditch and drove for a short period of time before crashing into a large culvert.

The vehicle had extensive damage and the driver had to be removed from the vehicle by the Red Bud Fire Department and MedStar EMS.
