The Republic-Times Athlete of the Week is Haley Berning, of the Waterloo High School girls basketball team. According to WHS coach Matt Lausch, Berning was Waterloo’s most consistent outside shooter this season, sinking an impressive 23 of 54 three-point attempts.

Also, Berning will participate in the Class 3A State Three-Point Shooting Contest to be held Thursday night at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena. She is among 32 girls who will attempt to advance to Friday’s final.

Only the top four shooters make the final.
