Woman dies after SUV crashes into Columbia home

The Columbia police, fire and EMS departments responded shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday after a white SUV struck the garage side of a residence in the 200 block of North Metter Avenue.

Although light snow was falling at the time of the incident, officials said a medical issue most likely led to the crash.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Monroe County Coroner Bob Hill said his office was requested to the scene and pronounced the driver, Babette “Babs” Jackson, 53, of Columbia, deceased.

Hill said first responders performed life saving measures on scene for 40 minutes.

“Preliminary investigation by the Columbia Police Department and Monroe County Coroner’s Office believe this was a medical event prior to the crash occurring,” Hill said.

An autopsy and routine toxicology are scheduled for Tuesday.
