Columbia Fire Department responded at about 4:20 p.m. Wednesday to a report of smoke detectors sounding and the smell of smoke in the lobby of the U.S. Post Office at 800 Columbia Centre.

Firefighters gained access to the roof and determined a broken belt in a rooftop ventilator was responsible for the smoke. They disabled the ventilator and cleared the scene with no further incident.
