The annual tradition of La Guiannee will still take place in Prairie du Rocher, albeit in virtual form.
La Guiannee is a traditional French New Year’s celebration dating back to the early 1700s in Prairie du Rocher. A group of singers perform traditional French songs, including “La Guiannee.”
In a normal year, the singing group visits various locations. This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they will not be visiting any homes or businesses.
One socially distanced performance takes place at 7 p.m. Dec. 31 on the porch of The Creole House in Prairie du Rocher.
Organizers are not encouraging people to come out to see them. Instead, the group plans to livestream the performance, and all are welcome to view this tradition from the comfort of their own homes.
