The Dupo softball team won a regional title on Saturday, topping Staunton 7-0 in Hillsboro.

The Tigers (28-6) advanced to the Class 1A Litchfield Sectional, where they will play Pleasant Plains on Wednesday.

Last Tuesday, Dupo defeated Roxana 10-0 in five innings to advance to the title game. The Tigers scored eight runs in the third inning to pull away. Rachael Donald smashed a three-run homer to put the game out of reach and freshman Megan Brown pitched another shutout.

The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning of Saturday’s championship game against Staunton and never looked back.

Alyssa Strubberg got it started with a bunt single and stole second. Caitlyn Brizzi smashed a double that scored Strubberg. Taylor Esmon, Amber Mobbs, Skylure Barlow and Stormy Sellers added hits in the inning.

Sellers went 2-for-3, Mobbs

went 3-for-3, and Brizzi went 2-for-4, and Brown recorded yet another shutout with 10 strikeouts.

“Not to be overlooked was how stellar the defense played in both games,” Dupo head coach Greg Pennock said. “Skylure Barlow anchored the infield with her normal ‘make it look easy’ plays. The outfield was great in both games, but was amazing in the Staunton game. Several outstanding plays by the outfield, featuring two highlight reel catches by Amber Mobbs in right field.”

Eagles, ‘Dogs in regional

The Class 3A Columbia Regional includes top-seeded Columbia (30-2) and second seed Waterloo (21-10), who could meet in the final on Saturday.

The Eagles have won 19 straight games, the last game on May 20 being a 13-1 whipping of Civic Memorial. They will play Althoff on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs will play Mascoutah on Thursday. Kasey Bradley leads Waterloo at the plate and on the mound, hitting .435 while posting a 17-7 record and 1.59 ERA as a pitcher.

For Columbia, Brianna Weilbacher has a record of 25-1 with a 0.58 ERA on the mound and is hitting .516 with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs. Kaylee Bastien leads the team in hitting at .526.

Gibault defeated Freeburg, 9-0, last Wednesday to reach the title game. Lauren Prader went 3-for-3 against Freeburg with two RBIs.
