County approves rezoning, lease

The Monroe County Board on Monday approved a rezoning request, among other action items.

The rezoning request was made by J.P. Fitzgibbons to change 18.4 acres  on the south side of Kaskaskia Road at its intersection with Route 3 from A-2 agricultural to B-2 highway business zoning.

The request gained recommended approval  from the Monroe County Board of Appeals and Planning Commission.

The only vote against recommendation was during the planning commission meeting, with one member saying increased traffic was a concern.

Fitzgibbons said he does not have any plans for the property, although he said any entrance to the property would be from Kaskaskia Road, as anything from Route 3 would need to be handled through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The commissioners also approved the continuation of a land lease program.

The county purchased land after the Flood of 1993 and has offered it for lease at an annual cost of $75 per acre.

Monroe County Weed Commissioner Tom Vogt said most people lease the land for agricultural use, though there have been some instances of home owners leasing the land as an extension of their yards.

Commissioners approved a continuation of the program for a term of five years at the previous price.

Commissioners also approved two contracts for county road district resurfacing to Rooters Asphalt of Beckemeyer.

Rooters was the low bidder for resurfacing in Delmar Meadows for Road District No. 3 in the amount of $124,195.80 and in Chantilly Village for Road District No. 7 in the amount of $113,952.25.

In other action, the board approved a notice of non-renewal of service with Americom, which provides the county’s IT security and support service.

Monroe County State’s Attorney Ryan Webb explained the notice does not necessarily mean Americom will no longer be the county’s provider, but the move allows Monroe County to negotiate with Americom.

During the April 1 county board meeting, a number of issues were brought up regarding the computer network at the Monroe County Courthouse.

The next meeting of the Monroe County Board will be Thursday, May 9, beginning at 8:15 a.m. in the courthouse.
