Charles A. Macke | Obituary

Charles Anthony Macke, 82, of Granger, Ind, died suddenly on Dec. 6, 2023, on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. 

Charles earned his gold card after serving 27 years as an usher at Notre Dame Stadium. He and Cathy attended many sports events on campus and were season ticket holders for Notre Dame women’s basketball. He attended the Fighting Irish victory on Wednesday evening before his death. He loved all things Notre Dame.

Charles retired from National Steel Corporation in 2001, where he worked as a systems engineer supporting the steel mill, first in Granite City, and in 1992, he transferred to Mishawaka, Ind. 

Charles was an Eagle Scout, teacher and served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. In his retirement, he drove for United Limo/Coach USA and Cardinal Bus Co. and volunteered with Game Day Services, greeting fans as they enjoyed game day on campus.

Charles enjoyed hiking with the Hoosier Hikers and researching and documenting his family’s genealogy. He quietly enjoyed swaying to the Alma Mater, and beyond loving family, he deeply loved God, country and Notre Dame.

He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Catherine Clare (Evers) Macke; daughter Jennifer and son, Gregory (Melissa) Macke; granddaughters Leah and Natalie Macke; sister Marcella (Andrew) Orsa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Frances (Schroer) Macke, brother Wilbert (Dorothy) Macke and sisters Rose Mary (Edward) Bujnak, Hedwig (Gilbert) Birkner and Gertrude (Vincent) Margiotta.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Dec. 18 from 5–7 p.m. at the McGann Hay Granger Chapel in Granger, Ind.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Dec. 19 at the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on Notre Dame’s campus. 

Inurnment will follow at Cedar Grove.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Notre Dame.
