A Waterloo man has been charged with arson in connection with a fire set last month.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department said that shortly before 7:15 p.m. March 21, deputies responded to the area of Barn Road at Country Club Lane for a property damage complaint.

Once deputies arrived on scene and met with the victim, it was discovered and appeared someone attempted to set fire and burn down a clubhouse on the property. 

Deputies discovered the clubhouse that sits off the roadway sustained damage that looked to be a result of someone setting a fire, however it appears the fire extinguished itself before burning the entire building.  

After processing the scene, deputies canvassed the area and were able to identify a person of interest.  

On March 27, police took a person of interest into custody in Waterloo. 

 Charged with felony arson is Trevor A. Burgess, 31, of Waterloo. 

Judge Chris Hitzemann ordered Burgess to remain in custody at the Monroe County Jail pending future court proceedings. 

Following a plea of not guilty entered by Burgess on this charge, the court issued an order finding there is “bona fide doubt” as to the defendant’s fitness to stand trial. 

Burgess was ordered to be examined by Dr. Daniel Cuneo for a mental fitness report due in 30 days. Results of this report could be made available soon, however.

The MCSD added it is still working this investigation and also looking into a previous fire set in a dumpster on Country Club Lane this past August.
