Memorial Day in Monroe County

Memorial Day programs take place locally on Monday in Monroe County as communities remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

In Waterloo, the City of Waterloo, VFW and American Legion host a service at 11 a.m. on the courthouse grounds. The featured speaker will be State Rep. David Friess, and patriotic music will be performed by the Waterloo Municipal Band and Kaskaskia Trail Chorus.

In Columbia, American Legion Post 581 hosts a program beginning at 11 a.m. inside its hall. The featured speaker will be retired Columbia High School principal and local historian Dennis Patton, with patriotic music performed by the Belleville Community Band.

In Valmeyer,  American Legion Post 901 will be the site of a 10 a.m. service, during which deceased legion members and all who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defending America will be remembered. The speaker will be Micah Carr, a Marine veteran who served two tours of duty in Iraq.

The public is invited to attend all of these events.
