Feb. 23 – Waterloo police have received multiple complaints from elderly residents who are getting scam phone calls from a supposed “grandchild” who has been “arrested.” The caller then begs this grandparent to not tell the parents and to send “bond money” right away. Police said this has been occurring over the past few years as scammers try to make the grandparent believe a grandchild is “locked up” by the police in an effort to obtain money. Police ask the community to alert family and friends who may be targets of this type of scam call.
Clarification – A clarification was requested following a report in the Feb. 10 police blotter following the Feb. 6 arrest of Deborah Rusteberg, 50, of Waterloo, for DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol and driving on the wrong side of the roadway on Rogers Street at Hamacher Street.
There are two Deborah Rustebergs living in Waterloo. Deborah Ann, 47, was at home the evening of Feb. 6 and does not drink alcohol.
