Waterloo can claim bragging rights in Monroe County girls soccer so far this spring, but the season is still young.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-1 on the season with wins Saturday against cross-town rival Gibault and Monday at Columbia.

Defense was the name of the game for Waterloo on Saturday, as the team did not allow the Hawks to record a shot on goal the entire contest.

Following a scoreless first half of action at Waterloo High School, Sidney Metzger and Bailey Huebner notched second half goals for the Bulldogs. Metzger also had an assist, as did the team’s scoring leader, Erika Lloyd.

Monday night at Columbia High School, the Bulldogs prevailed again in a hard-fought contest between two county rivals.

With Waterloo holding a two-goal lead in the second half, Morgan Glaenzer scored for the Eagles at the 54-minute mark to make it a 2-1 game. But Waterloo’s defense held up and the team held on for the win.

Lloyd and Shannon Rettig scored goals for the Bulldogs, with assists from Sierra Berg and Sydney Luedeman.

Waterloo will play at Freeburg on Monday before hosting conference nemesis Triad on Tuesday.

Columbia’s tough loss to Waterloo was preceded by a convincing 5-0 win over Notre Dame on Thursday.

Allison Riddle recorded a shutout in net and the Eagles had five different girls score goals: Glaenzer, Lauren and Taylor Kaempfe, Mackenzie Lowe and Casey Wood. Blair Wittenbrink recorded two assists.

Columbia (2-3) will host Summit on Thursday night before traveling to Breese Central for a game on Tuesday.

After starting the season 3-0, Gibault suffered two tough defeats. Following Saturday’s loss to the Bulldogs, the Hawks dropped a 7-1 contest to Belleville West on Monday.

Gibault hopes to right the ship with games this week at home (Oerter Park) against Edwardsville on Thursday night and at St. Pius on Monday.
