Waterloo ice skater has Olympic dreams

A Waterloo girl is making a name for herself in the world of synchronized skating.

Synchronized skating is a sport where a team of eight to 20 skaters skate on the ice as a team, moving as one flowing unit at high speeds during a judged routine while completing difficult footwork.

Haley Weilbacher, a seventh grader at Waterloo Junior High School, takes to the ice four days a week with a goal to be the best in the sport.

“I took her skating when she was 3 years old and she was hooked,” said her mother, De De Weilbacher. “Her Olympic idol is Meryl Davis. She is hoping that one day synchronized skating will be in the Winter Olympics.”

Haley competed April 9-10 at the Ice Skating Institute 2016 Synchronized Championships. Her team earned the highest honors when they won the title of 2016 Senior Youth National Synchronized Champions…>>>
