Waterloo, Columbia nab road wins; Dupo falls at home
In Friday night high school football action, Columbia earned an important win. The Eagles (6-0) traveled to Freeburg and won 45-14, securing a playoff spot in the process.
After the first quarter, the score was 7-7. But Columbia scored twice to open up the score to 21-7. Freeburg responded with a touchdown, but Eagles quarterback Drew Huebner provided some breathing room before the end of the half. Huebner connected with Jonathan Holmes for a 56-yard TD, then with Lamont Read from 24 yards out.
Columbia led 35-14 at the half.
Toward the end of the third quarter, Columbia running back Kenny Fields scored on a two-yard run. It gave Columbia a 42-14 advantage and was Fields’ third TD of the game. A Greg Long field goal gave Columbia a 45-14 lead, which was the eventual final score.
Fields rushed for 227 yards and three TDs in the win.
‘Dogs top Jerseyville
Waterloo was on the road, playing a conference game against Jerseyville. At the half, the Bulldogs trailed Jerseyville, 25-20. The ‘Dogs stormed back with 22 points in the fourth quarter to win 42-32.
Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Laskowski threw four touchdown passes on 9-for-13 passing and 204 yards. Waterloo running back Max Jennings also had a strong game, rushing for 159 yards and two scores.
At 2-4, Waterloo’s slim playoff hopes are still alive.
Dupo falls in OT
At Dupo, the Tigers were celebrating homecoming with a game against Principia. The Tigers weren’t able to get the win, falling 21-20 in overtime.
The scoring got started early for the Tigers. On the team’s first drive of the game, quarterback Drake Harvell found Brandon Roth for a 10-yard score. The duo connected again on the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead with 6:45 left in the first quarter.
Principia would then drive the field, but Dupo was able to keep them scoreless with a fumble recovery. In the second quarter, Principia got on the board. Dupo led 8-7 with about four minutes left in the half. The Tigers led 14-7 at halftime, but Principia tied it in the third quarter.
The game went into overtime, with Principia pulling out the win.
