Golf season heading into home stretch

High school golf action is quickly approaching postseason play, which starts with IHSA regionals early next month.

Columbia
Both of Columbia’s golf teams, the boys and girls, are having stellar campaigns.

Since winning the Monroe County Golf Tournament, Columbia’s boys have welcomed back senior Foster Gundlach as well as more wins.

In a match against Freeburg, Columbia won 165-190. The Eagles’ Nolan Antonini shot even par and Kyle Steve shot a 36.

The team won the Carbondale Tournament for the first time in school history. There were 16 schools making up 48 two-man teams. Players were in pairs for a combined score. Drew Nowak and John Cygnarowicz, as well as Antonini and Andrew Wittenauer, each shot 71, one under par. Drew Harm and Kyle Steve shot a 75.

The Eagles did lose to Alton Marquette, 148-163. Gundlach shot a 39 in his first appearance back. Andrew Wittenauer shot a 40.

The team finished ninth out of 13 teams in the O’Fallon Panther Classic, shooting a 342. Gundlach led the team with an 82 and Cygnarowicz followed with an 83.

Columbia beat Red Bud on Monday, 154-190. Gundlach shot a 35, while Steve and Nowack each shot 40.
The girls team won the Cahokia Conference Tournament on Monday. Columbia shot a 361, beating second-place Breese Central by 41 strokes.

Katelyn Jonak and Clara Taake each shot 88, tied with Marissa’s Abbey Knope for first place. Hannah Erpenbach shot an 89 for fourth place. Zoe Hejna and Katie Staelins each finished at 96 for eighth place.

Columbia was edged out by Waterloo last Wednesday. Columbia finished with 186, Waterloo with 176 and Mater Dei shot a 207. Jonak shot a 44 for second place.

Waterloo
For Waterloo’s boys team, the season has been successful. The team’s record is 5-4-1 and in tournament play, they are 39-22.

On Sept. 14, the team took second in match play by one stroke. Althoff won with a 160 and Gibault was in third with a 185. Ryan Stites shot the lowest score with a 37. Matt Todd shot a 38.

The team took seventh place at the O’Fallon Invite with a 337. Chase Whelan shot an 82, Colin Whelan followed with an 84 and Avery Wheat had an 85.

The WHS girls golf team is also having a strong year. Overall, in match play, the team is 15-4.

The team placed second of three teams on Sept. 14. Okawville shot a 185 and Waterloo followed with an 194. Freeburg shot a 228.

Haley Faus led the team with a 41, followed by Makensy Umscheid at 50.

Waterloo beat Marissa and Trico last Tuesday, shooting a 188. Faus led the team with a 35, two under par, for a personal best.

The team defeated Columbia and Mater Dei with a 176, a possible school record, last Wednesday. Destiny Resthoff led the team with a personal best 41. Faus followed with a 43. Shelbi Westmoreland also shot a personal best 44.

The girls placed 12th out of 16 teams at the Belleville Invite on Thursday. Faus led the team with a 60, good for third place overall.

Gibault
Last week, Gibault was consistent on the links.

On Sept. 14, the team shot a 175, good for third place amongst Althoff and Waterloo. Zach Heet led the team with a 42.

The next day, the team beat Chester and Valmeyer with a 167. Alex Dietz led the team with a 35, one under par. Heet followed with a 41.

Sidney and Morgan Wiegand played Valmeyer on Thursday. Sidney posted a 74 and Morgan shot a 67.

Valmeyer
The boys team was busy in the past week. On Sept. 14, the team shot a 230 for fourth place. Carson Sensel led the team with a 51. Cole Juelfs followed with a 59.

The next day, they placed third with a 195. Sensel led the team again with a 44. Juelfs and Ike Franke each shot a 49. Adrian Crossin shot a 53.

On Thursday, the team took third of four teams with an 185. Sensel continued to lead the team with a 44. Juelfs followed with a 45 and Crossin had a 47.

Valmeyer beat New Athens on Friday, 204-212. Franke led with a 46. Juelfs shot a 52.

The girls lost last Wednesday against Chester, 224-261. Jamie Siburt led the team with a 59. Johanna Franke shot a 64.

The team competed against Gibault on Thursday. They shot a 269 overall. Siburt led with a 60. Franke followed with a 71. They played Gibault again on Monday. The Pirates finished with a 272. Siburt led the team again with a 65. Franke followed with a 64 and Claire Hoffman shot a 67.
