How Geology Impacts Which Plants Grow Where

October 18, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Have you ever wondered, for example, why pine trees are native in far northern Illinois and in the Shawnee National Forest, but not in between? This presentation will describe how geology, together with climate, is a primary factor determining which plants grow in certain locations – and thus habitat distribution patterns.

A Kaskaskia Valley Audubon Society member, Sharon Geil has always had an interest in the distribution of plants and has travel to several very different areas of the country. She earned a master’s degree in quaternary geology and geomorphology from the University of Kansas. In addition to studying ice ages and landforms, her studies included soils development and changes in plant distributions across the landscape following the departure of the most recent ice sheet, more than 11.000 years ago!

This event is co-sponsored by the SWIC Biology Department and Math and Sciences.
