The Columbia Cycling Club, a group of dedicated cyclists, recently presented a check for $1,000 to the Monroe County Humane Society.

The cyclists are mainly from St. Louis, but have been coming over to Monroe County for years to ride through its natural scenic beauty.

Lou Malamas, one of the group’s founders, said the cyclists have been coming across the river for 20 years and wanted to find a way to give back to Monroe County.

They sold jerseys and donated money raised to the Humane Society’s ongoing capital campaign to build a new shelter off Hanover Road.

“We love coming out here,” Malamas said. “This area is well known for cycling and there’s not a lot of traffic.”
