The Waterloo City Council joined the Waterloo Police Department Monday night in honoring two young local boys for their efforts to help a neighbor in November.

Brothers Sal and Rylee Stallone received the city’s Good Neighbor Award for actions they took during a Nov. 19 incident.

The young men noticed smoke coming from their neighbor’s garage and upon further investigation could hear the engine of a car running inside the garage. After unsuccessfully attempting to make contact with the neighbor at her front door, they called their mother, who was at work.

Sheri Stallone made the 911 call to report the incident. WPD Officer Scott Spencer was the first to arrive on scene and was able to crawl under the garage door, which was not completely closed. He noticed the vehicle was unoccupied and the engine had been running for some time. After turning off the ignition, Spencer used a house key to enter the home and make contact with the homeowner, who then realized she had left the vehicle running.

Spencer nominated the young men for their alertness and call to action. He said the outcome of the situation could have been much worse if not for their response.

JV’s Downtown Bar & Grill sponsors the Good Neighbor Award and the boys were presented a gift certificate to the restaurant in addition to receiving a standing ovation from all in attendance at the meeting.

In other news from Monday’s meeting, aldermen approved an amendment to the official zoning map for a lot at 229 Bradford Lane. A contractor is planning to build a condominium unit there. It was approved at the committee level before it came to a council vote.

The city council also amended its net metering policy.

During the Dec. 21 council meeting, aldermen approved a professional services agreement between the city and HMG Engineers relating to the 2016 asphalt overlay project with an amount not to exceed $115,000. This project will be for Sunset Acres, Oak Street and Church Street from Route 156 to Oak Street.

Also on Dec. 21, the council approved a professional services agreement with HMG Engineers relating to the Safe Routes to School project that would install sidewalks from Market Street to First Street, to Waterloo Junior High School and to Zahnow Elementary. This contract amount is not to exceed $40,000.
